Water Purification: What Is Ultrapure Water And What Is It Used For?

How pure is too pure? When it comes to electronics, there's no such thing as too pure. Water that is used to wash microchips and other electronic elements has to be free of impurities that can damage circuits. Large manufacturers work with companies to install in-factory plants that produce ultrapure water, or UPW, which does not contain any dirt, minerals or salts.

UPW is required in huge quantities for manufacturing. It can take as much as 2,200 gallons of water to clean one integrated circuit on a microchip. A semiconductor manufacturing plant can use as much water as a city of 40,000 to 50,000 people!

Process of Creating Ultrapure Water

It's not easy to create UPW. Regular water has to go through several steps in order to become completely purified. The exact process is different between systems, but most include some or all of the following:

  • Filtration - pre-treatment that includes basic removal of contaminants
  • Reverse Osmosis - process that forces liquid through a membrane so that dissolved solids are filtered out
  • Oxidation - oxidizing some soluble forms of metals so they become insoluble and can be filtered out
  • UV - disinfection through use of ultraviolet light
  • Degasification - passing liquid over a solid column of air that forces gases to escape
  • Ion Exchange - removal of salts (cations and anions) using a gel or macroporous resin
  • Electrodeionization - advanced removal of salts using electrification and ion exchange resin
  • Ultrafiltration - additional removal of contaminants down to 20 nanometers

Once water has been treated via all these methods, it is as close to pure as possible, consisting of only hydrogen (H+) and hydroxide (OH-) ions in equilibrium.

Uses for Ultrapure Water

There are additional uses of ultrapure water in addition to the microprocessor and semiconductor industry. Non-contaminated water is also essential for other applications, including:

  • Powering steam turbines that generate electricity
  • Medical uses including water used in kidney dialysis and creation of IV fluids and injectables
  • Avoiding contamination of any kind in pharmaceutical and chemical research

Are you tempted to drink ultrapure water? Don't try it -- ultrapure water is not created for human consumption. It sounds like very pure water would be great, but in reality, it will suck important minerals out of your body and could make you very ill. It doesn't taste very good, either.
