How to Unstick Your Own Door Lock

by Kristina Burton

Your lock is to keep strangers out of your house, not you. So when your door lock starts sticking and makes it hard for your key to get into the lock or for the lock itself to work, you know it's time to do something about it. There are a few things that you can do on your own.

Lubricate Your Lock

The easiest thing to do is to lubricate the lock. That will let the key slide in easier, and can help the lock turn better. When it's time to lubricate your lock you don't want to spray any kind of lubricating spray into the lock. It may seem like the easiest way to do it; however, it can make things even worse. The oil itself can gum up the inner workings of the log. It also will attract dirt, making your lock even sticker. Instead you want to use graphite.

Graphite is a dry lubricating agent. The lead in your pencil is actually graphite. You can find powdered graphite at most hardware stores or even at hobby stores. It's often used as a lubricating agent in model cars. It comes in a small bottle with a nozzle on it. The bottle may look like a bottle of eye drops.

Lubricating your lock is pretty easy. First you need to put some of the graphite on your key. Then put a puff of it in the lock. Slide the key into the lock a few times. Then you should try turning the key. Sliding the key into the lock a few times will help to get the graphite all over the lock and the tumblers.

If you can't find graphite, you aren't stuck with being able to unstick your door. You can actually use a pencil. First you need to expose the graphite. This is more than just sharpening the pencil. You will need around an inch of exposed lead, so take the wood off up to that point. Then what you need to do is put the lead into the lock. It doesn't matter that it's not powdered. Break the lead up into the lock. Don't worry, it won't make it harder for you to open your lock. Grab your key and put it in the lock a few times. That will break up the lead and turn it into a lubricating powder. Try turning your key. That should get everything properly lubricated and ready to go.

If your lock doesn't work even after you try lubricating it, you need to have a professional come out and take care of it for you. The locksmith, one like Vista Lock & Safe Co, may need to replace the lock for you. They can help you find the most secure lock for your house.

About Me

Heavy Equipment Rentals-What You Should Know

Thanks for visiting my website. My name is Justin Cook. I am an avid do-it-yourselfer. I hate paying a contractor a large sum of money when I know that I can complete the project myself much cheaper by doing my own labor. However, there were a few projects I avoided because I didn't have access to the heavy equipment that would be needed to do the job. While surfing the web and looking at construction websites, I saw an advertisement for heavy equipment rentals. I had no idea I could rent this type of equipment. After doing some research, I learned what I needed to know about renting this type of machinery. I created this website because I figured if I didn't know, others didn't. If you are looking to rent heavy equipment for the first time, I hope my website answers any and all questions you may have.
