Farmhouse Fix Up: What You Should Know Before You Replace The Windows In Your Farmhouse

by Kristina Burton

Having new windows installed in your farmhouse is a wise investment that can make a big difference in your heating and cooling costs. However, how can you know which windows to choose? A lot will depend on whether or not you wish to preserve the traditional look of your home.

While installing either new wood or vinyl windows will likely improve your heating and cooling expenses, wood and vinyl replacement windows are quite different when it comes to maintenance and appearance. Knowing about these differences will help you make the best decision when replacing your farmhouse windows.

Advantages and disadvantages of wooden windows

When it comes to great looks, wooden windows are hard to beat. If your goal is to preserve the traditional appearance of an older farmhouse, wooden windows will do just that. They typically come unfinished and can be painted any color to achieve the look you want. You can also stain them if desired.

Wooden windows can be ordered primed and ready to be painted. You can also order pre-painted wooden windows. However, your color options will likely be more limited if you select the pre-painted styles. A big advantage of wood windows is that they can be milled to fit awkward window openings, which are fairly common in older farmhouses and homes. Wooden windows also stand up well under extreme temperatures.

Unfortunately, moisture can be a problem with wood windows. Wood replacement windows will need to be maintained well, which will involve making sure the windows are painted or stained to keep moisture from seeping through the wood. This will involve some additional work and expense over time. If you live in a climate where you get a lot of rain and snow, wooden windows are likely to require more frequent painting or staining.

Advantages and disadvantages of vinyl windows

Vinyl windows are generally less expensive than wood. They hold up well to moisture and require practically no maintenance or upkeep. However, extremely hot temperatures can cause vinyl windows to develop structural issues over time. This can make the windows difficult to open, and some leaking around the windows can occur. However, vinyl windows look attractive with nearly any home style or design, but they will provide a more modern look versus a traditional look.

Purchasing new windows is a big investment and is not one you should take lightly. Knowing the advantages and disadvantages of wood and vinyl windows can help you determine the best choice for replacement windows for your farmhouse.

About Me

Heavy Equipment Rentals-What You Should Know

Thanks for visiting my website. My name is Justin Cook. I am an avid do-it-yourselfer. I hate paying a contractor a large sum of money when I know that I can complete the project myself much cheaper by doing my own labor. However, there were a few projects I avoided because I didn't have access to the heavy equipment that would be needed to do the job. While surfing the web and looking at construction websites, I saw an advertisement for heavy equipment rentals. I had no idea I could rent this type of equipment. After doing some research, I learned what I needed to know about renting this type of machinery. I created this website because I figured if I didn't know, others didn't. If you are looking to rent heavy equipment for the first time, I hope my website answers any and all questions you may have.
