Dealing With Clogged Gutters? 4 Tips To Restore Healthy Flow

by Kristina Burton

A home with a properly installed guttering system is much better able to protect the home and the foundation it rests upon. But if the gutters are frequently clogged with debris, they cannot effectively perform this important work. Homeowners who find themselves standing atop a ladder to clean their gutters several times a year can use the following tips to help their gutters stay cleaner and clog free.

Deal with the leaf problem

One of the main causes of clogged gutters, especially in the fall season, is leaves falling onto the roof and then sliding or washing down into the troughs of the gutter system to form clogs. In addition to a leaf problem in the fall, some types of trees, such as oaks and maples, also drop pollen or seeds in the spring. Homeowners who have houses that are surrounded by trees that have grown and extended over the roof may want to consider removing some of the trees or having them trimmed to reduce the amount of leaf litter, pollen, and seeds that clog their gutters.

Maintain the gutters

Gutters, especially older gutters that are made up of several sections, should be inspected frequently for damage or issues that can make them unable to function properly. When inspecting guttering in this manner, homeowners should watch for:

  • bulges that indicate a potential clog or damage
  • separations in seams or joints that could allow leaks to form or worsen
  • places where the guttering has dislodged from the home, allowing rain water to flow onto the ground near the foundation of the home

Homeowners who note these or other issues with their gutters should have them repaired as soon as possible to prevent the problem from worsening.

Keep the downspouts clear

When leaves and other bits of debris enter the gutter, some of it will make its way into the downspouts. Since these components have joints and curved portions, clogs can be easily formed. To make sure that downspouts are clear and functioning properly, try running a garden hose into the gutter while observing to make sure it flows freely from the downspout.

Install protective screens or covers

Homeowners who want to stop spending their free time worrying about clogged gutters should consider installing protective screens or covers. These devices work to prevent leaves and debris from falling into the gutter trough. With less obstacles to contend with, rain water and melting snow are able to move more freely though the system.

Heavy Equipment Rentals-What You Should Know

Thanks for visiting my website. My name is Justin Cook. I am an avid do-it-yourselfer. I hate paying a contractor a large sum of money when I know that I can complete the project myself much cheaper by doing my own labor. However, there were a few projects I avoided because I didn't have access to the heavy equipment that would be needed to do the job. While surfing the web and looking at construction websites, I saw an advertisement for heavy equipment rentals. I had no idea I could rent this type of equipment. After doing some research, I learned what I needed to know about renting this type of machinery. I created this website because I figured if I didn't know, others didn't. If you are looking to rent heavy equipment for the first time, I hope my website answers any and all questions you may have.
